In this essay, I will consider the question of why military service shouldn't be mandatory. The purpose of military service is to protect the nation against any damage that can be caused by another country or terrorism. The ideal of military service is that those who are enroled in the army are the ones who voluntarily chose to serve their country in such a way.
Firstly, by making military service mandatory, many of the people who are preparing to die for their nation will be doing so only because a law commands it and not because of their own free choice. Those who will serve their country without a vocation will not do it as properly as those who voluntarily choose to do so. Another reason against mandatory military service is that such young people don't have the criteria to see whether they are ready or not to handle a responsibility as big as defending a nation.
On the other hand, mandatory military service appears as a career oportunity for people who have not decided their futures yet or who don't have enough resources to afford a career in an academic field.
Also, people in the army develop a strong sense of discipline, organization and punctuality. All these values stay with the person as everyday habits they always carry.
In conclusion, I am convinced that military service should be voluntary in order to ensure the nation's all around safety and to fully respect everyone's freedom of choice.
